The main story revolves around Adaku, a young girl whose life is traumatized by the Nigerian Civil War. The action starts from the city of Aba, and later to the village of Nkwubi. The death of her father, Police Commissioner Mgba, robs her of a middle class life-style, her family, having been interacting with expatriate families in the police barracks – an atmosphere which provides recreational facilities for officers and their families. This sophisticated setting influenced the adults and children alike.Losing her father turns the wheel of Adaku’s life to a new direction of suffering and deprivation. Adaku becomes more vulnerable to predators wanting her as second or third wife. Through it all, she knows what she wants. The story reflects the growing awareness of women’s rights in education and marriage.
